What Are the Growth Projections for Different Trades?

One of the best reasons for becoming a tradesman is that the trades are either matching or exceeding the growth rates for most jobs in the country. And this is not an exaggeration. With unemployment among college graduates reaching 2.5% and the average student loan debt growing to $26,000, the trades may offer a good alternative to people who want a better (and more affordable) professional life.

How Fast Are The Trade Jobs Growing?

Different trades have different growth outlooks. That’s just a fact of the labor market. However, trades are generally in a better position than most other jobs and professions.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for most trades between 2014 to 2024 is generally positive, especially when compared with jobs from other sectors. Here’s a short breakdown of what you can expect from different types off trades.

First of all, there’s carpentry, and it is projected to grow by 6% until 2024. This growth projection is generally to similar to the other job projections, which means that carpenters can expect secure work for the next few years.

Plumbing is another good choice for a trade. According to the BLS, the demand for qualified plumbers is expected to growth around 12% until 2024, which is twice as fast as the labor market’s growth rate. Also, plumbers are well-paid and can expect to earn as much as $51,500 per year.

Being an electrician is another good choice for a trade. Demand for electricians is expected to grow by 14% according to the BLS, and an additional 86,000 electricians will enter the workforce by 2024. Most important of all, however, is that electricians currently make around $52,700 per year, making it one of the most well-paying trades around.

Glaziers are probably the only tradesmen who are not going to see a lot of growth in the next few years. According to the BLS, the job outlook for glaziers is only around 4%, which is slower than the job market average. The good news, though, is that glaziers make an average of $42,000 each year, which means that it’s a well-paying trade even if it’s not growing as quickly as others.

Finally, we have sheet metal workers, and the demand for this sort of trade is expected to grow by 7% from 2014 to 2024, which is slightly faster than other jobs. The BLS also estimates that 9,400 sheet metal workers will enter the market by 2024.

Take Advantage of the Trend

If you have no prior experiences working in a trade then the best way to take advantage of the growing demand for tradesmen is to go to a trade school. A good trade school will not only teach you the skills you need, it can also teach you how to navigate the job market to get the best jobs.

Also, as demand for qualified tradesmen continues to grow, competition is sure to increase as well. So having a good training background at a good trade school will not only help you compete in the job market, it can also give you an edge in the event you want to negotiate your pay.

How Much Do Tradesmen Earn?

Before you enter a trade, you should first take the time to look at how much you could potentially earn. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, tradesmen earned between $30,000 to $50,000 in 2016, depending on their chosen trade, proficiency and other related factors.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that because trade jobs are expected to grow in demand in the coming years, the median income of most tradesmen are expected to increase as well. So if you would like to know how much you’ll earn as a tradesman then here’s some information that may help you.

Construction laborers and helpers are probably the least paid of all tradesmen. According to BLS statistics, they only make about $15.50 per hour, which translates to aroundd $32,200 per year.

On the other hand, working in the construction industry doesn’t require any educational background, so it’s an easy access trade. And once you develop better skills, you’ll be able to advance into more rewarding trades.

If you want to work as a carpenter then expect to earn around $21 per hour and a total of $43.600 per year. However, because most carpenters start out as helpers, don’t expect to earn the average $21 per hour immediately. You may have to be contented with $14 to $15 for a while until you advance further in your career.

Also, like most trades, carpenters are required to have the entry level education of a high school diploma or equivalent before they are accepted as apprentices.

According to the BLS, Glaziers make around $20 per hour and almost $42,000 per year. Glaziers usually work closely with construction personnel, particularly in construction projects that require large amounts of glass.

Additionally, more experienced glaziers are expected to handle certain types of machinery. So if you want to maximize your income in this trade then you may need to undergo further training.

According to the BLS, the average pay for plumbers in 2016 was almost $25 per hour, or around $51,500 per year. The best part about being a plumber, however, is that it is the kind of trade that is growing in demand each year, which means that plumber earnings are likely to rise in the future as well.

Sheet Metal Workers

Sheet metal tradesmen $22.50 per hour and $47,000 per year. Experienced sheet metal workers are expected to handle heavy materials and complex machinery

Also, this sort of job is closely related with the construction industry, so if you want to become a sheet metal worker, expect to work closely with other tradesmen.

Finally, we have electricians, and according to the BLS, their median income is around $25.35 per hour or $52,700 per year. However, given the nature of their work, electricians are expected to handle a wide range of equipment, and so you may not be paid an average electrician’s wages until you have developed the necessary skills to handle more complex projects.

This also applies to all trades. The better your expertise are, the higher your wages will be, and the best way to enhance your skills is by enrolling yourself in a tradeschool that offers the best training available.
